Definition of Success:

I wanna lay this out in front of everybody cause I am tired of arguing right and wrong and politics and energy and guns and women's lib.

For a while!

So here's the question and the rule.

What is your definition of success in 140 characters or less?

That is it, no right, no wrong, hell don't even think too much just throw it out and get discussion started.

Here is my current answer:

I want the people in my life that I respect to respect me and my children to grow up to respect themselves.

If I end a day/week/year/lifetime and have met that criteria I could die in my sleep happy.

I have tons of other goals and aspirations. None of them are crucial in me considering my life a success.

I am anxious to see if comments can affect my answer.

Ok I am gonna stop, I have a habit of rambling and I have a lot more to say but I wanna stop and move to the comments.

I did post this question on twitter as well and the first response was from lksugarman
her blog is here.

Her answer to the question was "
whatever it takes to deliver totally peaceful night's sleep, wake refreshed w/ a smile and anticipation of a new day's events"

Thats nice.

If you don't want to talk about this (it will be fun) go over to and check out the seriously sweet photo gallery we posted from this weekend. click here.

  1. i want to run out of money and air at the exact same moment to be a success!

  2. I believe the "Defintion of Success" is... When you are abundant in good health, wealth, and love. When your cup overflows in all of these areas. But that's just the first step....

You are a success once you give to others what you are overflowing...Success is a responsibilty.

  3. Success has nothing to do with what other people think is successful...

Once you complete your desired goal, you are successful. I was just successful in retrieving a loose piece of gyro meat from my keyboard. Success!!!

Don't live by others standards. Set your own and be "successful"

Though as WALSTIB says...timing is everything

  4. Success is being content while doing no harm.

  5. I love this cause everybody is right, no arguing!

It will get boring in a couple days and we will all want to argue again, but for now... smiles and flowers.

  6. Success is never losing the ability to walk on faith and trust in love.

Something I came close to losing after my sister was killed by her husband.

  7. I think I would have to say all of the above. I have neat saying on a plaque in my office....

"Excellence can be attained if you...
Care more than others think is wise.
Risk more than others thinks is safe.
Dream more than others think is practical.
Expect more than others think is possible."

  8. Of course, you can always quote the famous Ralph Waldo Emerson - my favorite..
    "To Laugh Often and much,
To Win the Respect of Intelligent People and the Affection of Children..
To Earn the Appreciation of the Honest Critics and Endure the Betrayal of False Friends..
    To appreciate Beauty,
To Find the Best in Others
To Leave the World a Bit Better,
    Whether by a Healthy Child,
    A Garden Patch or
    A Redeemed Social Condition.
To Know Even One Life has Breathed Easier because You Have Lived.

    This is to have Succeeded.

    Success is a Journey...Not a Destination.

  9. Great topic and I am enjoying reading everyones responses.

For me, success is acknowledging and taking time to celebrate all that is good in my life while addressing and learning from the things that aren’t.

  10. Obviously, it means different things to everyone, and there are different degrees of success.

I think everyone here has said some great things, especially Pam and jarohr. Nice work with the gyro meat, pal. Kudos to you.

I like to quote Justice Potter Stewart when it comes to defining subjective concepts like success. He's the one that said, when it comes to defining obscenity, "you know it when you see it."

  11. This is awesome great comments.

    Anybody else??

  12. Success IS the journey.

It's about leaving a situation/moment/person better than I how found it.

  13. success is being able to:
    1. live on a 1/3.
    2. save a 1/3.
    3. party on a 1/3.
    4. live by the golden rule!

  14. This has been an awesome post.
Inspiring and hilarious all at the same time. Thanks guys.

  15. I believe success is defined as taking what was given to me and moving the ball a little bit further down the field for my children. If I can do that then I feel successful. - well actually I think there is a little more to it, but that is my short answer.

  16. Here are a few more good quotes. Very motivational topic Cody, nice break from the heated debates!

"The secret of success in life is for a man to be ready for his opportunity when it comes."
    Benjamin Disraeli

"Would you like me to give you a formula for success? It’s quite simple, really. Double your rate of failure. You are thinking of failure as the enemy of success. But it isn’t at all. You can be discouraged by failure or you can learn from it, So go ahead and make mistakes. Make all you can. Because remember that’s where you will find success."
    – Thomas J. Watson

  17. For me, success is waking up (almost) every morning eager to do whatever I'm going to do that day, whether it's spending time with friends and family, going to work, or going on a trip.

Success is being responsible for my own actions, learning from them, becoming a better person, and having the balls not to blame my mistakes on someone else.

Ultimate success would be having enough money to do whatever the heck I wanted to...and there's a lot I want to do, and it ain't cheap.

I love the discussion in the comments.. so... GO FOR IT!
