Let's talk about the psychology of the web user a little.

Go here real quick and read the comments on this deal....

How can Randy Allen's response to a private citizen taking some photos of an event and pasting them online be "That is weak"? What kinda bitter jerk looks at something that doesn't take a stance, doesn't look to make a profit for anyone and the photographer doesn't even ask to have his name promoted on and do nothing but degrade it. Why does the internet give people balls they don't normal have, would Randy Allen have step up to the photographers face and said man that's a really weak photo gallery? Does Randy Allen not realize that even though it's on the internet a real person put work into it? I am all about someone taking a stance and hell sometimes you gotta get nasty to defend or argue about something, but this is just a photo gallery of classic cars and a pretty cool event in Downtown Hutch!  They are damn good pictures!

What the hell is wrong with people?

Thanks to everyone that doesn't get nasty in the comments section. Thanks to all those parents from the past who raised kids that would feel bad in their hearts if they typed something nasty, just for the sake of feeling cool for degrading someone else's work.

Update...

A very cool reader of whatsuphutch just showed up at our offices after reading this comment and brought us a huge disk of pictures...  He said he didn't like the negative comments on the site and wanted to try and make the guy happier! So we posted it here it's called "A Rod Run Gallery just for Randy Allan"

  1. Don't know why people do it, but that is pretty much the best way of dealing with it ever.

  2. this post is weak. carl's bar is weak. third grade football is totally weak, as are two point conversions. political discourse--weak as a kitten. Cody and I in constant agreement – super-weak.

attempts at sarcasm in blog comment posts...weak.

  3. Dave,

You are right about everything except third grade football... We beat Buhler in overtime this weekend, forced a fumble on the goaline to win it, maybe greatest football game ever.

    Sarcasm is tough....
The reason sarcasm is tough is because jerks like this actually put mean shit in comments and it makes it hard to make attempts to be funny.

  4. In my experiance, you can't make everyone happy, and the people you can never make happy will tell you about it! I'm willing to bet, this person never went to see the event, but was one of the people that complained that main street was shut down for 3 days!

Great event! Loved that they were able to put it on in Hutch without a lot of support from our leaders. Also loved how some of the leaders were talking about this being the 1st annual event! LOL, I'm willing to bet, if the organizers went to Maize, they would be handing out the money to bring that event in.

  5. I think this guy's comment may have been misinterpreted - he was probably (as dave may have been pointing out) trying to be sarcastic, or maybe he didn't realize that you guys were a not-for-profit-(yet?) site.

Half the people I talk to who aren't that familiar with WUH think you're run by the Hutch News. If you were a "real" news blog, that would have been weak. I would have expected significanly more pictures.

I know you put a lot of time and effort into WUH. A lot of us really appreciate what you, Mitchell, Bob, and everyone else do. Not everyone is going to appreciate it, and not everyone is going to like your site. If you want your site to be an open forum and if you want it to grow, it might be in your best interest to not get so defensive everytime someone says something that could be construed as negative. Sure, if people are repeatedly negative and are starting to spread their vitrol throughout the blog, yeah, they need to be reprimanded.

It just seems like you're quick to say "oh, your comment is negative, that's not how we do things here and if you don't like it, take a hike, buddy." Of course, it's your blog, that's your perrogative, and I'm sure that sometimes a little policing is necessary. Of course, sometimes, so is a little bit of diplomacy ;).
