Get outside and be creative.

This is my son and 2 of his buddies ....

They all play videos games, one has an iPod touch here, my son has his laptop, we have a PS3 a Wii, Netflix download. They all 3 take sports pretty seriously... (from left to right they are the starting Center/Right Tackle/QB on offense and 3 tech/6Tech and Linebacker on Defense of the 8-0 5th grade Hutch Blue Hawks.... sorry got sidetracked)

My point is they have all the distractions of being an 11 year old boy in 2010.

But... today they have me on supervision (one of them always does) and I go out of my way to make sure they take the time to be boys. We shut the iPod and laptop and game systems down and they went outside. Luckily the other 2 boys have great parents too and they all 3 love going outside and figuring out away to have fun with dirt, sticks, a shovel and an old 2 horse trailer that I think my wife is kinda pissed about it still being out behind the house.

Kids these days have access to so many distractions, technology, performing in school, sports, any number of activities...

Just remember, making them "Go outside and be creative" isn't lazy, it isn't taking time away from them improving their skill set, it's letting them be kids and it's great parenting.

  1. Sometimes kids just need to unplug and be kids and play. They forget how to do that sometimes! Such a great day to be outside too. (Even if you take the laptop out there to blog..)
