Be the change you want to see...

Mahatma Gandhi once said "Be the change you want to see in this world"

Sometime in the past 6 months someone posted that on the internet and I read it... thats all the details I remember from this inspirational moment in my life. (I got a lot stuff spinning around in my head... not good with details)

Anyhow, New Year's is close... and resolutions will abound. I'm not really a fan of the tradition of New Year's Resolutions.. I think it actually more often than not gives folks a reason to put off something they realize they should do in July... but, not the point.

A bunch of folks in the next 48 hours are gonna ponder, discuss, announce, commit to, write down some kind of decision or change they wanna make in their life. That's a good thing (if your resolution is "I'm gonna steal more stuff... that's not good, I get that), people making change in their lives for the better is better for everyone who is touched by that person's life.

So... I hope that someone will read this post.... heed Gandhi's advice, realize that they, and they alone can improve their situation... and step off in that direction and make things better.

Would love to hear what improvements you are gonna make .... cut loose in the comments.

Have a Happy New Year.

  1. I really like what you said about how self improvement touches other people's lives. I don't think we often look at the domino effect that results from our introspective resolutions. If one strives to lose weight and get healthy they may live longer and more actively with their loved ones.

One of my resolutions is to actively DO something about things I complain about. Prison overcrowding and released ex-offenders ending up back in prison is an issue in which I have an interest for a long time. This coming year I applied for a volunteer position at the Correctinal Facility (and hope to start soon)--hopefully doing something to help reduce recidivism.

This year I will be fullfilling a resolution made years ago-- I will be graduating college with a BA in psychology and a minor in social and criminal justice. So one of this year's resolution is to get into grad school to get my Masters in Social Work.

The last resolution is to become healthier through proper diet and exercise. No, I won't be joining a gym just yet-- but with the help of the Wii exercise plus and the kinect games and the trampoline I will at least be getting up from my desk and moving around. And the kinect games are a really good aerobic exercise!

  2. I want to "listen" more and talk less. I think there are so many people in the world that need to be listened to and that I want to hear what they have to say! I, too, want to be healthier, and, so true, if we all took that step the "domino" effect would be amazing to every aspect of our nation. So much depends on it. Otherwise, I want to continue to live simple, appreciate life and what I have and love the country I live in and mankind...we are truly blessed...we must stop complaining and enjoy the day.

  3. Great comments... LOVE IT!!!

Sharon, the whole "Prison Overcrowding" thing is possibly the greatest example of "Be the Change you want to see in the World" I have heard of in a long time. Kick some butt on that one!!!

Mom, I really like the phrase "we must stop complaining and enjoy the day."
