Balance is a bitch...

Here's what I have going on right now...

I'm a Husband, Dad, Son, Grandson... etc.

I made the grand decision to become self-employed again... so I'm a CEO, Salesperson, Receptionist, Accountant, Janitor... etc.

We own 4 acres... so I feel like a damn weed farmer...

My kids play sports so I chase that all over the damn Midwest...

We have 2 dogs... pretty low maintenance... but still...

I'm a homeowner... which sounded great... but damn sometimes I wish I had a landlord to call to fix shit.

I'm getting old... nobody told me that after 30 your waist size can keep up with your years on earth...

Etc.... Misc other stufff... etc...

Most importantly... I know I don't really have any more going on than the next guy.

Here's my real issue...

I can't stand to not "Kick Ass" at the things I do... I don't mean actually kick someone ass... it's not a competitive thing where I judge my parenting or husbanding against others... I just wanna be good at it... I wanna show my kids that something worth doing is something worth doing right.

I often fail at that... the 4 acres of grass looks like our house was abandoned during the dust bowl...

But, that's how I wanna live... full throttle in the things I choose to do.

Problem... "Balance", I absolutely know that I should not do extreme excercise and diet regiments because I didn't do shit for a year or two and got fat... (I'm actually doing ok at balancing that right now)

I know that I shouldn't pour myself into this project so much that 5 other projects suffer... I'm working on it... but its a complete lifestyle change and I'm only 50% sold on the idea...

This blog post sucks because I don't even know why I wrote it... but this "Balance" issue is consuming my brain right now...

  2. I am really surprised its just now kicking your ass. It has been kicking mine for years now.

Every time I turn around I think I have a plan that Im gonna have all figured out now.

You just have to let go, you can't do everything, but you can kick ass at everything you do but if you try to do too much you don't kick ass and that just sucks.

so maybe have some one else take care of the dogs for a while...?

  3. Same problem here, although sometimes it's hard to tell by looking at me and what's around me. Successfully cultivating 14 acres of weeds here, except where the defective septic system killed them (not everything is greener over the septic tank, apparently).

I once heard this sort of problem described as the inability to say "That's Good Enough". We joke around here that only half the family has the TGE syndrome, and the other have the NEVER-TGE syndrome. Makes for lots of "interesting" situations.

Remember, I'm WAY older than you, so I've been experiencing this angst for a lot more years than you have. In fact, a few years ago it got so bad that I made that year's motto "Just Say Maybe". Every time someone asked me to do something, I immediately replied "Maybe" and then looked at my life balance and how this particular request fit into that.

Don't misunderstand, I struggle with this perfectionism/laziness problem daily...and I fear that I'm not winning the war, let alone the battles. But once in a blue moon, I manage to execute a Maybe that leads to better balance.

    Something to consider!

  4. Connie... Don't know if it's "perfectionist... But I definitely expect myself to be at a certain level.. Sometimes a good thing, sometimes not so much.

Emily... It's not a "just now" thing...but it has gotten way worse... I used to be Alot more focused.. Way less things going on in wanted to be a part of.

Jeff I like the "maybe" philosophy I have started taking it all the way to "no" and am doing OK with that...but I don't really like it.

  6. Cody-

Have you tried the 4 quadrant thing. I can't seem to take the time for it, but it has worked wonders for other I know.

I feel you, there are so many awesome things I want to be a part of, I constantly over commit myself.

I am getting better at the over commitment thing... probably going to be a never ending process for me.
